A MESSAGE FOR THE MUSIC ASSOCIATIONS OF CANADA
MY PATHWAY TO PERFORMANCE COACHING
Artist/Performance Producer Founder of State Of The Artist
At the beginning of 2013 I found myself without a band for the first time in a decade.
I had spent my 20s fronting a band called Crush Luther. We had a couple of number 1s on Muchmoremusic; toured Canada 6 times; played Warped Tour 3 times; and put out 2 albums.
Then we ended it. We had stagnated. The passion was missing because it wasn't growing the way we envisioned. You can only be excited about playing the Horseshoe Tavern on Saturday night for so long before you start viewing it as a barrier to bigger things.
So we quit. Like almost every band ever.
Reality kicked in for me. I hadn't learned any skills beyond the creative in the last 10 years. Why would I have? I was waiting to be blasted off to super stardom with a hit song. No need to learn other skills.
The reality was harsh. The cruel new knowledge that you don't get everything you want just because you want it.
I started an introspective mission to figure out why I fell short. For that matter, why do 99% of artists fall short of their vision for success?
I started asking artists and bands that I knew if I could come to their rehearsals and comment on what I think they could change to succeed better. I'm a good talker, so some of them said yes.
Now I was watching and observing instead of performing. This was powerful. I could observe, without the pressure and emotion of being the performer. From the side of the audience, but with the experience of a performer.
I could see in the performers face what she was thinking because I had thought it 1000 times on stage. I knew what she was battling with in her mind.
It was psychology. It was fear of judgement, rejection, success, failure. That was the raging battle.
People respect technical skill, but they connect to fearless expression. There is a fanbase waiting for the artist that can connect.
After 3 years of coaching 2 hundred and something artists, I've figured out systems for teaching the intangible art of expression and connection to artists in a way they can understand and implement.
When the belief is there, the artist has guts to take the necessary chances on stage - the ones that will make her undeniable to her audience.
That's where the fanbase is hiding, and that's what I coach.
